Fabrika kızı - Factory girl

Watercolor & gouache, 34x27 cm (13.4x10.6 inches)

Available  $500
E-mail me: minekereinders@gmail.com

Materials: Lemon yellow, quinacridone gold, quinacridone red, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, cobalt teal, sepia, and titanium white gouache on Arches 140 lb rough.

Method: I started with a wash of diluted white gouache over the entire paper. This underpainting makes it easier to control edges. A hard edge can be softened easily, even after it has dried completely. Subsequent washes can be used transparently (watercolor only) or somewhat opaque (watercolor and gouache mixed). The gouache underpainting serves to unify the two media so there is no conflict between transparent and semi-opaque passages.
This painting was the first in which I used this method. I liked it so much that I've used it on several paintings since then.

Location: Ankara, Turkey.

This is such a lovely painting, soft but there is so much strength in it. Thank you so much for explaining your method and also mentioning the colours you used, this is so helpful. Using the gouache as a diluted wash will be something I will try now.

Thank you so much Ann. I'm glad you found my description useful. If you use white gouache as an underpainting, make sure it is a very thin wash (i.e. add a lot of water) so any watercolor you put on top still retains transparency.
