Watercolor & gouache, 7"x5" $75
If you would like to buy this study, please send me an e-mail. It will be available after June 1.
I painted this study in preparation for a large watercolor. I decided to include some feathers in the composition, and since I don't remember ever painting feathers before, I had to do at least one study. I may do a few more. This feather comes largely from my imagination and does not belong to any identifiable bird species. The challenge was to paint a feather against a medium-value background not using masking fluid (I just don't get along with it). The white in this is mostly the paper, with some gouache added to feather the edges (no pun intended).
This is not meant to be a realistic representation, but I hope it is at least a believable interpretation of a feather. Your feedback and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Believable and absolutely gorgeous. I don't like to use miskit either, so I like your method of using a touch of gouache at the edges--it worked beautifully here! A subject I would never attempt, esp. not from my head!!
Totally agree with Laura, this is georgeous! I'm looking forward to see the main painting...
Wow, a very difficult subject and your version looks like you've been practicing for years.

Hi Laura, glad to hear I'm not the only one who dislikes using miskit. I never thought of attempting this subject before either. It was one of those sudden inspirations, but I had to see if I could actually paint a feather before adding several to a large painting.
Hi Yasemin, thanks. If I'm happy with how the large painting turns out, I'll post it here when it's finished.
Thanks for that compliment, Bill. No, I never tried it before.
Hello Bárbara. Welcome! I'm glad you visited.
Oh, I love these! They're beautiful!
